Navigating the Transition from DeltaV Operate to DeltaV Live: Key Challenges and Solutions

Navigating the DeltaV Operate to DeltaV Live Migration
SHARE ARTICLE

Key Takeaways

  • DeltaV Operate to DeltaV Live migration often starts with hardware. Systems older than v14.LTS need a platform upgrade, and new Windows versions can mean new workstations and servers.
  • Custom VBA scripts are the biggest DeltaV Live conversion hurdle. Scripts don’t carry across to DeltaV Live, so catalogue them early and decide display by display whether to convert or redesign.
  • DeltaV Live validation should be risk-based. Focus testing on displays and functions that affect product quality and data integrity, and involve quality teams from day one.

DeltaV Live brings HTML5 graphics, ISA-101-aligned design components and new ways to access process data. With Emerson stating that DeltaV Operate will not be available after the DeltaV v16.LTS release, every DeltaV site will eventually make the move. The benefits are well documented (see our comparison of DeltaV Live and DeltaV Operate), but so are the obstacles. In life sciences manufacturing, they tend to fall into three groups: technical, regulatory and operational.

Technical Challenges: Compatibility, Hardware and Scripting

DeltaV Live requires v14.LTS or later, so older systems need a platform upgrade that often brings hardware changes with it. Emerson's hardware data sheet lists v16.LTS on Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 workstations and Windows Server IoT 2025 servers, and notes that current computers no longer have VGA connectors, which can affect existing KVM equipment. The solution is a detailed assessment early in the project, so hardware, operating system and infrastructure changes are budgeted and scheduled rather than discovered mid-project.

Scripting is often the larger hurdle. DeltaV Operate displays frequently depend on VBA scripts accumulated over many years, while DeltaV Live uses TypeScript for custom logic and class-based elements for reusable symbols, according to Emerson's DeltaV Live product data sheet. Scripted behavior does not simply carry across; it has to be reviewed, rationalized and often rebuilt. Catalogue scripts early, retire those no longer needed and decide display by display whether a direct conversion is acceptable or whether a redesign around ANSI/ISA-101.01 principles will deliver more value. Direct conversion is faster, but it carries legacy design choices forward.

Regulatory Challenges: Validation and Data Integrity

In a GMP environment, a new operator interface is a change to a validated computerized system. Displays, alarm presentation, electronic signatures and audit trails all need to be assessed under change control. The answer is not to test everything equally, but to apply a risk-based approach such as the one described in ISPE GAMP 5 (Second Edition), concentrating effort on functions that affect product quality, patient safety and data integrity. Regulators are moving the same way: FDA's Computer Software Assurance guidance, finalized in 2025 for medical device production and quality system software, takes a risk-based view, and the European Commission published a revised draft of EU GMP Annex 11 for consultation in 2025. Involve quality and validation teams from the assessment phase onward.

Operational Challenges: Training and Downtime

Experienced operators have years of muscle memory built around DeltaV Operate, and a new interface, however well designed, can slow responses in the first weeks. Involve operators in display reviews, train them on a simulation environment such as DeltaV Simulate before go-live, and provide on-shift support during the first production campaigns. SOPs and training records should be updated in step with the change.

Downtime is the other constraint, because life sciences facilities rarely have spare capacity. Align the platform upgrade and cutover with planned shutdowns. Since DeltaV Operate remains available through v16.LTS, some sites phase in DeltaV Live area by area where system design and validation strategy allow. Build factory and site acceptance testing into the schedule, and agree rollback and contingency plans before cutover day.

None of these challenges is unusual, and none is a reason to delay. Most become manageable when identified early and built into a phased plan, as outlined in our guide to strategic planning and timelines for DeltaV Live. The upgrade can also strengthen cybersecurity: Emerson states that DeltaV v16.LTS maintains ISASecure SSA Level 1 certification, aligned with IEC 62443.

FAQ

Quick answers to the DeltaV questions we hear most.

For many sites, it is the combination of an older DeltaV version and custom VBA scripting, which together determine how much display work can be converted and how much must be rebuilt.

They need to be assessed under change control, with the level of testing based on risk and focused on functions that affect product quality and data integrity.

Through hands-on practice in a simulation environment, involvement in display reviews and on-shift support during the first campaigns after go-live.
