Key Takeaways
- DeltaV Operate reaches end of life after v16.LTS. Emerson has confirmed that DeltaV Live is the only DeltaV HMI going forward.
- DeltaV Live vs DeltaV Operate is a shift in technology and design. HTML5 graphics, reusable display elements and ISA-101-aligned components replace ActiveX and VBA.
- DeltaV Live conversion needs planning in GMP plants. Systems need v14.LTS or later, and every converted display goes through change control and operator training.
For most of DeltaV™ history, operators have run their processes through DeltaV Operate. Its successor, DeltaV Live, has shipped with every DeltaV system since version 14.LTS, and Emerson has now made the direction clear: its July 2026 workstation and server hardware data sheet states that "DeltaV Operate will not be available after the DeltaV v16.LTS release." For pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturers, where every operator display is part of a validated system, understanding how the two interfaces differ is the first step in planning the move.
Different Technology Foundations
According to Emerson's DeltaV Operate product data sheet, DeltaV Operate incorporates ActiveX technology and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). Displays are built and edited within Operate itself, and custom behavior typically relies on VBA scripting. DeltaV Live is built on HTML5 graphics, with displays configured in a dedicated tool called Graphics Studio and custom logic written in TypeScript where scripting is needed. Emerson's DeltaV Live product data sheet describes class-based graphic elements that let engineers define a symbol once and reuse it across displays, with instance-level changes tracked and reversible. In practice, that means less repetitive engineering and more consistent displays across a site.
The two also handle screens differently. DeltaV Operate supports 16:9 and 16:10 aspect ratios at up to 1920x1080 resolution, while DeltaV Live graphics are not tied to a specific resolution and can be arranged across combinations of monitor sizes.
Display Design, Alarms and Operator Experience
The bigger shift is in design philosophy. Both interfaces reference the ANSI/ISA-101.01 HMI standard and Center for Operator Performance guidance, but DeltaV Live ships with Human Centered Design components built around those recommendations. That gives teams a ready-made starting point for low-distraction displays that support situational awareness, rather than the color-heavy graphics common on older systems.
Alarm handling and trending will feel familiar. Both interfaces show the five highest-priority alarms in an alarm banner and embed historical trends from the DeltaV Historian or an OSI PI historian. DeltaV Live adds watch areas, alarm rollups and display hierarchy navigation in its Premium tier, along with runtime language switching (two languages in Standard, eight in Premium). It supports electronic signatures that Emerson describes as addressing 21 CFR Part 11, and it can embed approved web applications and camera feeds in operator displays. With DeltaV v16.LTS, Emerson also introduced DeltaV Live Enterprise View, which provides secure, read-only access to process displays outside the control room.
Licensing, Lifecycle and What It Means for Life Sciences
The Standard tier of DeltaV Live is included with DeltaV v14.LTS and later, and Emerson states that it "has all of the functionality of DeltaV Operate Runtime and Configure." Existing system and workstation licenses include the Standard tier on upgrade, while Premium features require an additional license that, from v16.LTS, is available by subscription only for new systems.
For regulated manufacturers, the practical implication is that DeltaV Live now belongs on every long-term automation roadmap. Systems older than v14.LTS need a platform upgrade before DeltaV Live is available at all, and converting or redesigning operator displays is a change to a validated system that must go through change control, testing and training. Teams that start early can choose deliberately between converting existing displays largely as-is or redesigning them around modern HMI principles, rather than having an end-of-support date make that decision for them. Our guide to planning a DeltaV Live transition walks through realistic timelines.

FAQ
Quick answers to the DeltaV questions we hear most.
DeltaV Operate is the legacy operator interface based on ActiveX and VBA. DeltaV Live is its HTML5-based successor, with resolution-independent graphics, reusable class-based display elements and built-in design components aligned with ISA-101.
Yes. Emerson states that DeltaV Operate will not be available after the DeltaV v16.LTS release and describes DeltaV Live as the preferred HMI for DeltaV systems.
DeltaV Live is available from version 14.LTS onward. Systems on earlier versions must be upgraded first.
